The East Rand Youth Choir stands as one of South Africa’s longest-established and most distinguished youth ensembles. Founded in 1978, the choir was created to unite the most promising young voices of the East Rand in a disciplined, aspirational musical environment. What began as a regional initiative soon developed into a choral institution known for excellence, integrity and artistic ambition.

​Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, the choir built a national reputation for refined performance and musical depth. These decades saw milestone achievements such as acclaimed national appearances, international collaborations and the landmark 1994 European tour, which introduced the choir’s signature sound to audiences abroad. The release of Musica Grata Deo further cemented ERYC’s standing as a youth choir capable of professional-level artistry.

​As the country entered a new era, the choir embraced its role as a multicultural ensemble representing the diversity and spirit of the modern East Rand. The 2000s brought renewed growth, fresh repertoire and a widening circle of schools feeding exceptional talent into the choir. ERYC continued to strengthen its artistic voice through classical masterworks, contemporary choral compositions, South African pieces and major collaborative festivals.

​In the 2010s and 2020s, the choir’s stature was elevated even further through appearances at prestigious events such as the World Choir Games and national youth choir showcases. Under the dedicated leadership of Gert Pottas, the ERYC has maintained an unwavering commitment to musicianship, discipline and the pursuit of excellence.

​Today, the East Rand Youth Choir comprises approximately 85 carefully selected singers aged 14–19, each chosen for their ability, work ethic and musical potential. The choir remains a respected ambassador for the East Rand, upholding a legacy built over nearly five decades. Its mission is unchanged: to nurture exceptional young musicians, to present performances of distinction and to inspire South Africa’s youth through the transformative power of choral music.
